I never imagined that my little urban oasis in Raynes Park would one day be crowned the Judges’ Choice winner of the 2024 BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine’s Gardens of the Year competition. But here I am, reflecting on a journey that started with a simple dream—to create a space where my family and nature could thrive together.

The Vision Behind My Garden

When I first moved into my home, the back garden was nothing more than a small, linear space with little character. I knew I wanted to transform it into something special, a haven that not only brought joy to my family but also invited local wildlife to coexist with us. I envisioned a garden filled with colourful perennials, pollinator-friendly flowers, and reclaimed furniture that would give it a charming, bohemian touch.

Bringing the Garden to Life

Over the years, I carefully selected plants that would bloom in harmony, attracting bees, butterflies, and birds. I designed different seating areas to create a sense of intimacy and relaxation, including a cozy summerhouse where I could unwind after a long day. Every piece of furniture, every pot, and every plant had a story—some rescued, some repurposed, and all chosen with love.

The garden became a reflection of my personality: wild yet balanced, lively yet peaceful. Friends and family would often comment on how the space felt “lived-in,” with layers of greenery weaving seamlessly together to create an inviting atmosphere.

The Award That Changed Everything

When I entered my garden into the Gardens of the Year competition, I did it purely for the joy of sharing my passion with others. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the judges would unanimously select it as the winner! Hearing their feedback—that my garden evoked emotion and celebrated the beauty of naturalistic design—was incredibly humbling.

The recognition has been overwhelming in the best way possible. I’ve connected with so many fellow gardeners, received messages of encouragement, and even inspired others to embrace a more nature-friendly approach to their outdoor spaces.
